This season I’ve been enjoying classic summer pairings. Certain foods, like people, just seem to belong together, and as the sunshine months wear on, I have been determined to uncover as many of these classic combinations as possible. Just back from Colorado and eager to see what fruit the greenmarket bore in my absence, last [...]

Still bouncing off my summer buzz of everything USA—Team USA, 4th of July, vacas to Vermont, Newport and Colorado, and a recent bike ride over the bridge and into Billyburg for spectacular soul food at Pies ‘n’ Thighs—I decided to co-host a polka-dot themed girl’s night with my Tribe. Using Nini’s apartment and my fervor [...]

Market Report: Blossoming

There is something both romantic and utterly decadent about eating flowers. From earthy saffron strands infusing basmati rice to dainty violets adorning sugary-sweet desserts, flowers are alluring and exotic, delicate, and like cherries, erotic. I adore summer salads decked with peppery nasturtiums, rose petal jam on Melba toast, even pansies and lavender. But too often [...]

Love is in the air, and cherries are at the market! Amanda flies in next week from LA, and we’re planning to catch up in the kitchen before we both make our way to summertime weddings; she’s off to a lavish affair right here in New York City, while I make my way up north [...]

It all started when I made a vinegar cake. Holed up late at night in my apartment with a clichéd but absolutely palpable PMS craving for chocolate, I pulled out a recipe for a one bowl, nine ingredient chocolate cake that promised to be done and delectable in under 45 minutes. It was 1am, and [...]

I may be a chef and a foodie, but one of my favorite meals has always been bread and butter. Though I was not a finicky child, on those nights that our family ate “grown up food” I would be allowed, assuming I’d at least tried my meal and finished enough of the vegetables, to [...]

On the day of our Iron Chef challenge, Snotty McSnobster arrived at my fifth-floor walkup, toting an uncharacteristic burlap sack like a sort of twisted Santa Claus. First he pulled out a bottle of Plymouth, then a pack of limes. I queried the Snobster, “That’s it? We’re drinking pure alcohol? Are you trying to get [...]

Right before I took off on a two-week jaunt down south, I met up with my most mordant friend for sherry and snacks at one of my favorite spots in the city, Blue Ribbon Bar. Over a bottle of amontillado and cumin-roasted almonds, Snotty McSnobster and I exchanged stories about the scandal-clad party hop we [...]

One day last week I woke up to the delicious spring sun warming me through the window of my fifth-floor walk up. Taleggio and I spent a few lackadaisical moments basking in the glorious heat, as if we were literally thawing ourselves out after a long winter. With nothing pressing on my agenda (a much [...]
