6 Train uptown to 86th St.; holiday luncheon at Café D’Alsace, compliments of over-generous Warren; flushed from over-generous waitress’ heavy hand with the Cotes du Rhone; pureed lentil soup with garlicky croutons, roasted cod with melted leeks, profiteroles with a candle and a chorus of “Happy Birthday” from 30 longtime friends…

stroll to 86th and Central Park in my new coat with pink satin lining, sharing drags of Nat Shermans with Todd and Amber…

shake off the chill and settle into a cozy corner table at Café Sabarsky for some more red wine, sadly too full for sachertorte; this time the wine is almost black-purple and it’s German, ?; darkness falls as we talk politics, inescapable loves and out-dated Manhattan cocktail spots…

splurge on a cab ride down 5th Ave. so I can catch a glance of the glittering, festive windows of Bergdorfs, Cartier, Saks…

cheap manicure in the East Village to let my vino buzz die down; “deep red, please…”

don cocktail hat, short black dress and vintage feathered coat I bought with Amanda in Paris years ago…

dinner at Park Avenue Winter, glistening white décor extends to my Bartlett Pear cocktail; once seated, order a pony of Piper Heidsieck (since He’ll have none), a sirloin (“yes, please add the 3 grams of fresh-shaved white truffle”), sides of Brussel sprouts and potato latkes with apple sauce, poached pears and brown butter pecan ice cream for dessert…

once home, more dessert…
